Communication is a vital part of our daily activities, from working one on one with clients to addressing large groups at public meetings.  Social marketing, working with the media, and crisis communications are important tools for all public health professionals.

OPHP is pleased to offer six courses to assist professionals with creating communication strategies, developing personal communication skills, and developing long term goals.  Based on A Field Guide to Designing A Health Communication Strategy by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs, each course will look at a specific piece of the communication process.

For only $200, professionals will receive registration to all six courses (approximately $33 per class!), a Certificate of Completion, have access to special online learning sessions, receive the entire A Field Guide to Designing A Health Communication Strategy manual, and additional resources.  Professionals may register for individual sessions at a rate of $40 per course.

Morning Session:  Introduction to Health Campaigns

Effectively communicating your message can be a challenge.  From advertising a program to promoting behavior change, there are many tools and actions that can yield positive results.

The facilitator will take participants through the steps of creating a communications plan, including analyzing the situation, audience segmentation, behavior change objectives, and creating message briefs.

Afternoon Session:  Tools for the Spokesperson

This session will focus on the skills and tools needed to effectively communicate orally and through the written word.  Public speaking skills, writing for the media, and interpersonal communication skills will be discussed.  This session will include hands-on activities, including the opportunity to present a short message for feedback and have a press release critiqued.  Participants will need to bring a USB drive that holds at least 4 GB.

    April 21

    Morning Session:  Crisis Communication

What happens when a crisis strikes?  Whether a pandemic, natural disaster, or problem within your organization hits, communication is vital.  Learn how to prepare and implement a crisis communications plan.  The facilitator will discuss traditional and electronic channels to disseminate information, effective messaging, and follow up activities.

Afternoon Session:  Social Networking and Media

Facebook, Twitter, blogs, podcasts, websites, RSS feeds….how do you decide what’s right for your program or organization?  With so many new options to network and market, it can be difficult to determine which modes are most effective for the audiences you want to serve.  This course will offer a hands-on opportunity to study and create tools.  Participants will need a Facebook account established before this course and knowledge of the equipment available at their organization.

    May 12

    Morning Session:  Communicating with Stakeholders

The communication process doesn’t stop with flyers, press releases, and blogs.  An in-depth study of messaging and audience segmentation will provide the basis for reviewing communication techniques for grant proposals, boards of directors, committees, partners, and policy makers.  A variety of presenters will share their tips on content, delivery, and personal skills needed to effectively reach stakeholders.

    Afternoon Session:  Strategic Management

This session looks at the need and challenge of developing long-term communication plans, evaluation of methods, return on investment, and organizational management.  Worksheets and tools will be shared to help participants with the design and oversight of the communications function.  Case studies and examples will be shared.

The Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana Public Health Association, Marion County Health Department and Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Public Health Office of Public Health Practice are pleased to present the 2010 Indiana Joint National Public Health Week Conference, A Healthier America:  One Community at a Time. The conference will be held on April 6 and 7, 2010, at the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Campus Center.

Imagine other countries looking to the U.S. as a model of health. A place where everyone has access to health care and services, where we’re celebrated for embracing healthy lifestyles, and our communities and neighborhoods make it easy for us to make healthy choices. We can make a difference.

If every one of us commits to promoting good health in our communities, we can create a ripple effect from coast to coast. Through just one neighborhood that makes its public parks accessible, one municipality that launches a bike-helmet safety program, one group of people who join together to bring fresh foods to school, or one health center that offers a vaccination program, we can create a collage of public health successes across the country.

Block by block, let’s find these small changes and make them today in our communities. The only way to become a healthier nation is to create healthier communities. Join APHA during National Public Health Week 2010 as we work together to create "A Healthier America: One Community at a Time."

This two-day conference is designed for professionals in:
